Galactic Mass Estimates Using Dwarf Galaxies as Kinematic Tracers
نویسندگان
چکیده
New mass estimates and cumulative profiles with Bayesian credible regions (c.r.) for the Milky Way (MW) are found using Galactic Mass Estimator (GME) code dwarf galaxy (DG) kinematic data from multiple sources. GME takes a hierarchical approach to simultaneously estimate true positions velocities of DGs, their velocity anisotropy, model parameters Galaxy's total gravitational potential. In this study, we incorporate meaningful prior information past studies simulations. The distributions physical informed by results Eadie & Juric (2019), which used globular clusters instead as well subhalo Ananke Gaia-like surveys Feedback Realistic Environments-2 (Fire-2) cosmological simulations (see Sanderson et al. 2020). Using DGs beyond 45 kpc, report median 95% c.r $r_{200}$ = 212.8 (191.12,238.44) enclosed $M_{200}$ 1.19 (0.87,1.68)$\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$ (adopting $\Delta_c=200$). Median at specific radii also reported (e.g., $M(<50\text{ kpc})=0.52\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$ $M(100\text{ kpc})=0.78\times10^{12}M_{\odot}$). Estimates comparable other recent GAIA DR2 but notably different (2019). We perform sensitivity analysis investigate whether individual and/or more massive Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) on order $10^{11}M_{\odot}$ may be affecting our estimates. find possible supporting evidence idea that some affected LMC not in equilibrium MW.

Understanding dwarf galaxies as galactic building blocks
This is a summary of a general discussion held during the third EuroConference on galaxy evolution. Various observational features of the stellar populations in present–day dwarf galaxies were presented to introduce the discussion on the possibility that these systems be the main building blocks of spiral and elliptical galaxies. Many people in the audience turned out to think that the inconsis...
متن کاملPlanetary nebulae as mass tracers in galaxies
Planetary nebula are useful kinematic tracers of the stars in all galaxy types. I review recent observationally-driven developments in the study of galaxy mass profiles. These have yielded surprising results on spiral galaxy disk masses and elliptical galaxy halo masses. A key remaining question is the coupling between PNe and the underlying stellar populations.
متن کاملSpiral Galaxies and Tracers of Mass Accretion
Can the present dynamics of spiral galaxies tell us something about the merging history, the formation and evolution of disks? Galaxy interactions thicken or destroy disks; the simultaneous presence of thick and thin disks is a tracer of past accretion, and also of recent disk re-formation. Observation of a large number of counter-rotating disks is also evidence of past mergers, as well as the ...
متن کاملAbundances as Tracers of the Formation and Evolution of (Dwarf) Galaxies
This aims to be an overview of what detailed observations of individual stars in nearby dwarf galaxies may teach us about galaxy evolution. This includes some early results from the DART (Dwarf Abundances and Radial velocity Team) Large Programme at ESO. This project has used 2.2m/WFI and VLT/FLAMES to obtain spectra of large samples of individual stars in nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies and d...
متن کاملThe Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies in the Galactic Halo
In the first part of this contribution the observed velocity dispersions in Galactic halo dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are reviewed , and the consequences for dark matter content outlined. The results are suggestive of a dSph dark matter mass of ∼2×10 7 solar masses, independent of the luminosity of the dSph. Alternatives to the dark matter interpretation are also briefly discussed. In the ...
